My grandmother turned 90 on 20 May 2009. NINETY!

A week later, she was admitted to Mount Saint Joseph's Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Originally, it was because her heart rate was very fast and we all thought it was just probably a precaution that she stay until things were relatively normal again.

Deep down, I think she knew it was something more; deep down I think we all knew it was something serious. Cancer. Under her tongue and it had spread.

For some reason I felt compelled to take my camera those first few days in the hospital and photograph her with family, etc. A little while later, I thought it might be nice to remember these days for myself and so I've created this blog.

I have been lucky - as my lola keeps reminding me. I've had many years to know my lola and I feel like this is yet another way to give her dignity.

Which Do You Prefer?

Hehehehe... there's only so much one can do without electricity!

There was a "brown out" today along 12th Avenue between Heather and Oak, right around the area where the Windermere is located. (A "brown out" is the Filipino term for a power outage. Don't ask.) It was also very hot in my apartment and I was looking forward to the air conditioning at the Hospice. You can imagine my disdain - yes that's a word and I'm allowed to use it - when it suddenly dawned on me that I'd have to take the stairs to lola's room!

It wasn't bad, but I sweated profusely for the next half hour after I got upstairs.

Today was a good day.

Since there was no electricity, we couldn't incline the bed. I had to help lola eat while she was still pretty much in a lying down position - fine with the mashed potatoes, but when she asked for "something hot," like coffee, that became the true adventure! Still, she ate and talked a little... no inis face today!

While she was resting or napping (which is why meals take so long), I realized how much I've come to depend on electricity... there was very little in the room to amuse me... except of course, for the whole Ensure-Boost debate. I haven't decided yet which I'd rather have. I need more samples...
