My grandmother turned 90 on 20 May 2009. NINETY!

A week later, she was admitted to Mount Saint Joseph's Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Originally, it was because her heart rate was very fast and we all thought it was just probably a precaution that she stay until things were relatively normal again.

Deep down, I think she knew it was something more; deep down I think we all knew it was something serious. Cancer. Under her tongue and it had spread.

For some reason I felt compelled to take my camera those first few days in the hospital and photograph her with family, etc. A little while later, I thought it might be nice to remember these days for myself and so I've created this blog.

I have been lucky - as my lola keeps reminding me. I've had many years to know my lola and I feel like this is yet another way to give her dignity.

FIGHTING BOREDOM

Lola is sick of the pureéd food and the meal replacements - but she can't chew anything and she doesn't really know what she's hungry for (other than "coffee and bread" which she requested the other night, when Malou and Mary Gail slept over and during my last couple of visits). Heck, look how unimpressed she is with water (which is probably not difficult - water IS boring, but she doesn't like juice or anything maasim). She's quite strong still and often insists on holding the glass herself since she can get more than the one little, cautious sip any one of us gives her because we're too afraid of drowning her!

Lola loves going outside - hanging in the garden - so much that it's almost become a daily routine. This is a good thing, but she can't sit in the wheel chair for too long. What to do then for the remaining hours of the day? Emo-Dramas only last a couple of hours. The news, which is another thing she likes to watch, lasts only half an hour. She can only sleep and watch television for so many hours in a row.

She laughs often when we joke around about what she does all day. Sometimes she pretends not to hear:

"WHHHAT?"

She takes a long, dramatic blink, presses her lips tightly, and nods. You can tell that she totally plays up her boredom - probably in order to not be bored... if that makes any sense!
