My grandmother turned 90 on 20 May 2009. NINETY!

A week later, she was admitted to Mount Saint Joseph's Hospital in Vancouver, BC. Originally, it was because her heart rate was very fast and we all thought it was just probably a precaution that she stay until things were relatively normal again.

Deep down, I think she knew it was something more; deep down I think we all knew it was something serious. Cancer. Under her tongue and it had spread.

For some reason I felt compelled to take my camera those first few days in the hospital and photograph her with family, etc. A little while later, I thought it might be nice to remember these days for myself and so I've created this blog.

I have been lucky - as my lola keeps reminding me. I've had many years to know my lola and I feel like this is yet another way to give her dignity.

DAY IN & DAY OUT

The other day, lola said she didn't want to drink her Resource - Boost, or Ensure, or whatever you want to call it... it's a meal replacement. She's finally sick of it. (I would've been sick of it in the first week, I think!) She's not a big eater to begin with. Add to that the culinary merits of the hospital chef and the fact that her dentures no longer fit, and you've got a pretty tough eating dilemma. Don't even try to trick her by telling her the hospital food is delicious. The nurse tried and lola told her: "You eat it, then!"

She likes chicken. I'm not sure how many Church's Chicken runs we've done, but I'm sure by now the owners have a new vacation house because of our patronage! Lola doesn't eat much of it - she ends up coughing it all out - but, I think it's all about the taste. She likes ice cream and carioca... If you time it right and can take telling her what's on the spoon each time you put it to her mouth, all while she's watching All My Children, or One Life to Live, or Guiding Light (she keeps changing her story about which she follows religiously) and eat something at the same time because lola hates eating when no one else is eating, then you're good.
